Grace Point Church Pre-Camp 2010

Our church just finished children’s day camp. We had over 200 kids and 200 workers that made this week happen. Lizzy worked at pre-camp which was for all of the kids that were too young for camp and their parents were volunteers. Jackson and Maggie participated since Lizzy was working. These are some of the pictures that I found of them from the week.

Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head

Jackson is taking swim lessons in Bentonville. Today was “safety” day so they just walked around the pool and learned rules such as don’t run. So far I am feeling pretty ripped off by the Red Cross. $69 is a lot of money to pay for what they are calling swim lessons. We are getting a new instructor next week that will hopefully be better with the kids.

We let Jackson play in the raindrop pool for a few minutes since he didn’t get to be in the pool during his lesson today.

2 Year Old Randomness

Life with a two year old can be exciting at times. Weather he is swinging a bat or saying things that have nothing to do with the situation, you are bound to get some entertainment or possibly injury. Jackson combined the two yesterday by playing baseball at my office. He had a nice hit and then decided to tell me that he has a hot tub.

Lizzy’s Plan To Starve Me

I was given notice that I am on a diet for at least the next two weeks. Lizzy talked to her trainer about it and here is what I will be eating for the next 14 days. I am only allowed to drink water.

The Other Member of the Family

Fastball

Jackson is only two but he has a crazy obsession with baseball. Every morning he comes in our room carrying his bat and ball ready to play. He has developed a pretty decent throwing motion and has a good bit of velocity on his pitch. He has picked up most of it on his own from going to a lot of Northwest Arkansas Naturals games and watching a little baseball on TV. He lifts his leg just like the pitchers that he watches.

Lizzy brought Jackson and Maggie by the office earlier this week so that we could take some pictures of them. It is hard to get a two year old and a three month old to look at the camera at the same time, but we managed to make it happen once.

Maggie graced us with her presence at 8:41PM on Thursday, November 19, 2009. She weighed in at 7 lbs. 14 oz. and was 21 inches long.

Kaiser Rehabilitation Center

Ed was required to stay in Tulsa for his rehab. We went over to visit and got a tour of the rehab floor last weekend. I wasn’t expecting anything like what we saw. They have a city inside the hospital so that the patients can do things that they would do daily.

The SPOT is an amazing device that you want to buy but never want to use. My father-in-law recently had to use his and it saved his life. SPOT wrote about it in their latest newsletter.

It all started as professional photographer Ed Cooley was pursuing his passion looking for the perfect shots in remote areas of the Ozark National Forest in Arkansas when some unstable terrain sent him 30 feet down off the end of a bluff into a creek bed. In extreme pain and miles from anywhere, Ed pressed his 9-1-1 button on his SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker around 2:30 PM on October 15, 2009 that initiated the rescue process with the International Emergency Rescue Coordination Center (IERCC). GEOS provides 911/SOS monitoring and emergency dispatch through the IERCC based in Houston, Texas. Due to the remoteness and terrain of the location, Search and Rescue from the Newton County Sheriff Department and other local agencies took hours to arrive to the location, badly damaged from previous winter ice storms. Due to where he fell, SAR couldn’t get a good lock on his position, but searchers found him by the green LEDs on the front of the SPOT unit flashing. At about 8:45 PM, members of the US Forest Service arrived on the scene. Ed was deemed severely injured and the crew waited for another crew to arrive with a backboard. Still, it was dozens of hours later that the team of many rescue professionals was able to hand carry Cooley to a sight where a helicopter could transport him.

Cooley’s injuries included a broken ankle, collarbone and pelvis.

We’re so glad that Ed used his SPOT in the proper way and the US Forest Service Echoed this sentiment: – Mark Morales, the U.S. Forest Service district fire management officer assigned to the Hector and Jasper offices commented on how prepared Cooley was for being in the wilderness:

“Ed was about as prepared as a person could hope to be,” he said. “He had that SPOT beacon, and not only had it, but used it properly. There’s no doubt in my mind that beacon saved his life. It took people almost seven hours to get in there, even with the beacon transmitting his location. We had the coordinates, and our people were using our GPS and were sending it to us, telling us where he was, and we were able to find him.” Morales said if Cooley had not had the emergency transponder, the story would have had a different ending, because the search probably would have had to be called off until daylight on Friday.

“With him in the water, there’s no doubt in my mind what the outcome would have been,” he said.

“The SPOT was a gift from my wonderful wife Faith. I will now have the rest of my life to thank her,” says Cooley.
